Another great summer here at Possum Trot Christian Camp. We said our goodbyes to the two young men who lead our Leader Treks groups here all summer. They were a huge blessing as we were able to make great strides at the new Eagles Nest Bathhouse! There is now a sink and mirrors on both the boys and girl's side with fresh pain and the outside has been repainted and finished up. A couple more things to do, but nearly finished! The groups also worked at the Wigwam painting inside and out. We removed one of the showers in preparation to add a flushable toilet but still have an outdoor shower there. We also removed the drawers from under the sink countertop as we were unable to keep critters out of them and created shelves instead so that we can still supply the kitchen through critter-proof plastic totes. Our groups also did brush management and built picnic tables and tent platforms, painting all as well. They donated metal roofing to redo the Morrison Bunkhouse roof as it was leaking.
More plans to come as we gradually improve and expand the camp facilities.
On the animal side, we have ten geese, and hatched out 47 new chicks for next year's egg supply. The egg ministry has gone well this year. We were getting 18-30 eggs per day and provided eggs- and roosters- for multiple families in the area. Next year should also be a big year for the egg ministry!
We still have 12 sheep and they helped in grass maintenance this year when they ran out of grass in their pasture. We currently have three Pyrenees dogs and our grandaddy Pockets. They keep the place safe for visitors and from local wildlife. Hummingbirds are feeding at our feeders and gaining weight for their upcoming migration south. We have a blue heron that migrates through twice a year, stopping in at the pond below the cabin. We caught sight of some baby wild turkeys in June and turtles are still passing through. Lizards, skinks and salamanders still roam here to the delight of anyone who sees them.
We still have nesting hawks, owls and occasionally an eagle will pass through, much to my pet birds' consternation.
We anticipate having the historical society conduct tours to bring people here to see where Jess and Ruth Wilson lived. Some things have changed, as would have if Jess and Ruth were still here, but most things remain the same or improved. Come see us soon!
